Oh our beloved Cookie! If she could talk, she would tell you of a horrid tale...
A tale of human greed, irresponsibility and the complete lack of regard for the life of animals.
Good thing this tale has a mostly happy ending, at least for her.
Cookie's life started in much the same way as any other kitten in American households.
A loving family decides to let their beloved cat have kittens, thinking they will find good homes for each of them. However, very few of these families actually do any type of screening at all, and either sell or give the kittens to the first person who shows up to take them.
Cookie and one of her brothers were purchased by an older woman who was living with her daughter and son-in-law. The son-in-law did not like cats, so the woman had to keep the two adorable kittens locked up in her small bedroom. After just a short time, the smell of an unattended cat litter box, sent the son-in-law into a rage, and to make a long story short, Cookie and her brother were thrown out in the yard to a pack of 4 dogs (by the very woman who purchased them in the first place).
The dogs were known neighborhood cat killers, and caught Cookie's brother first. I will omit the details of the attack, but will say that it was horrible and unimaginable.
Cookie was chased up a tree, and thankfully too afraid to come down.
A brave neighbor was able to get her out of the tree, and called us to pick her up.
Cookie is a beautiful and extremely loving cat, however she does not adjust to change, people or other animals easily. She has about an 800ft area that is her self appointed "safe zone" which consist of the back of our house where the hallway and bedrooms are located. 95% of her day, she spends in the comfort of MY bed (although she has pretty much taken it over, so it is more hers than mine, lol)! She digs around getting the covers just to her liking, and snoozes away. When I sleep, she does not sleep next to me, she sleeps ON me. I usually don't mind, until it is time to move, and I get fussed for disturbing her.
The rest of her day is spent as hall monitor, restroom monitor and guardian of the food and water bowls. The only time she braves the trek to the living room or kitchen, is when the food bowl has reached a dangerously low level. When that happens, she is sure to come let me know, so I can fill it back to the level she finds appropriate.
If we have visitors or guest, she is no where to be found (unless you decide to look under the bed), until she feels the coast is clear.
When the sanctuary is complete, I suspect it will be difficult to get her Majesty's approval, unless of course I move my bed in there as well. Still we will show her where the entrance is, and give her time to explore it on her own if she chooses. *The sanctuary will be connected to our house, and the cats who have passed all health checks, will be allowed times to roam freely between the house and the sanctuary. Cats with communicable diseases, will have their own areas to roam, but will not be allowed in the same area as unaffected cats, or in our home.
Cookie's story teaches us how important it is to encourage ALL pet cats be spayed or neutered.
For shelters, rescue agencies (and even breeders), we learn the vital necessity of proper and thorough screening of potential adopters and the environments the adopted cats are going to be living in, as well as a plan for the cats return, should unforeseen events arise.
When you decide to rescue, foster, shelter, adopt or bring a cat into this world, that cat is ultimately YOUR responsibility for the rest of the cats life! If the cat leaves your care, please be certain, that cat will have the full and loving life he or she deserves.
